We\u2019ve just wrapped up two weeks filled with curiosity, exciting questions, and sparkling eyes. Together with more than 600 scientists, the Vienna Children\u2019s University inspired over 4,000 children to get excited about research and science\u2014and we had the opportunity to introduce a new generation to the fascinating topic of the microbiome through engaging lectures and interactive workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kinderuni Wien opening lecture by CoE Director of Research Michael Wagner<\/strong> and CoE Board of Directors member Angela Sessitsch<\/strong> introduced more than 100 young participants to the fascinating world of the microbiome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CoE Deputy Director of Research Christine Moissl-Eichinger<\/strong> shared fascinating insights into the world of farts\u2014who farts, why, when, and for how long. And what farting has to do with our diet and the climate. CoE Board of Directors member Alexander R. Moschen<\/strong> took us on a child-friendly \u201cjourney through the gut\u201d with exciting endoscopic videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tanja Kostic, head of the Bioresources Competence Unit at AIT, along with CoE PhD student Lisa-Carolin Bilz and AIT researcher Clara Pogner, led a fascinating workshop on \u201cThe Secret Rulers of the World\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eli\u0161ka Sedl\u00e1\u010dkov\u00e1, Nadezhda Todorova, Krishna Suresh, Christina Kumpitsch, Shabnam Azimi<\/strong>, and Alexander Mahnert<\/strong>, PhD students and Postdocs from the Moissl-Eichinger Lab<\/strong> at MedUni Graz held two workshops on \u201eInvisible Austronauts\u201c<\/em> and \u201eTalking Microbes\u201c<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A big thank you also goes to Annelieke Overbeeke (Darmkram)<\/strong> and her workshops \u201cBecome a Gut Detective<\/em>\u201d, which show that the key to healthy eating lies in sparking children\u2019s curiosity about food. Who can eat a rainbow?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CoE technician Stefan Thiele<\/strong> provided fascinating insights into the world of marine microorganisms in his lecture \u201cThe Marine (Micro)biome<\/em>,\u201d and CeMESS colleagues Bettina Glasl, Hannah Koch, Jakob Rauter<\/strong>, and Stefan Schuster<\/strong> did the same in their workshop on the \u201cSuperpowers of Marine Animals\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TU colleagues Matthias Schittmayer-Schantl<\/strong> and Georg Ramer<\/strong> (TU Vienna) provided exciting insights into the structure of plastics in their workshop \u201cMolecular Detective<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CoE postdoc Gergely Odor<\/strong>, CoE PhD student Emily Grubb<\/strong>, and Orsolya Rita Bajer-Moln\u00e1r<\/strong> from the group of CoE Board of Directors member Andreas Bergthaler<\/strong> explored how infectious diseases spread through social networks, how outbreaks emerge, and how wastewater surveillance can help detect infections at the population level in their workshop \u201cVirus Detectives\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past two weeks, participants have conducted experiments, used microscopes, done research, engaged in discussions, and\u2014above all\u2014discovered a passion for science. From microorganisms and viruses to the gut and the microbiome, all the way to marine life, children were able to experience research firsthand and become little scientists themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
