CoE Microplanet reunites for 2nd Annual Meeting

The CoE Microplanet held a highly inspiring second Annual Meeting at beautiful Castle Schlaining.

Over two and a half days, 95 scientists from across disciplines came together to discuss the crucial role of microbiomes in shaping the health of humans, animals, plants, and the planet. The meeting showcased the breadth and depth of our research, with presentations from all 19 work packages and nine method facilities.

The amazing setting at the Peace Castle Schlaining in Burgenland provided the perfect backdrop for scientific exchange and social interaction. The serene environment, coupled with ample opportunities for informal discussions, fostered a collaborative and inspiring atmosphere.

The annual project meeting kicked off in the afternoon of the first day with an update on the project status and achievements, followed by presentations of publication highlights from the previous year. The day concluded with the Austrian Microbiome Research Award ceremony, which recognizes outstanding microbiome research conducted in Austria.

Day two was dedicated to showcasing the project’s cutting-edge science through a series of oral presentations delivered by early-career researchers. The afternoon featured an innovative poster session designed to maximize engagement, in which tour guides led small groups through the exhibits. The day concluded with an insightful guest presentation by Philipp Münch (HZI), who spoke on the crucial principles of FAIR data.

The final day continued the strong focus on scientific exchange with a morning session featuring more oral presentations. To provide a break and an opportunity to enjoy the venue, attendees could join a relaxing group walk or take a guided tour of Castle Schlaining. The project meeting concluded with a final afternoon session dedicated to more scientific oral presentations, followed by a closing session.

We returned with fresh perspectives on how microbial communities can truly drive solutions for a sustainable future. As the cluster enters its third year, we eagerly anticipate the groundbreaking research that lies ahead.
